Famous Football Players

Filed under: Homeschooling, Love of Learning, Writing, Inspire You Children — Kerry @ 8:12 am

My son does not like history as most of you know. But he LOVES sports! Do you have a child like this?

This week you can tie in sports with studies. What subjects can you do?

– History
– Writing
– Research

Choose a famous football player from a past Super Bowl. Write a report about his life and achievements.

If you are unsure how to help your child write a short 1, 3 or 5 paragraph paper, use Teaching Writing: Structure & Style. It’ is absolutely the BEST writing program to tie in writing with ANY subject area, even football.

*** For younger children who aren’t writing papers, let them alphabetize all NFL teams by city and mascot.

Super Bowl Feast

Filed under: Kerry Beck, Holiday — Kerry @ 12:29 pm

Only Thanksgiving surpasses Super Bowl Sunday as the day Americans eat the greatest amount of food.  According to the Snack Food Association, Americans double their average snack food consumption for the Super Bowl, eating nearly 20 million pounds of chips during game time.

Can You Really Do Art with Football?

Filed under: Homeschooling, Love of Learning, Inspire You Children, Boys, Art — Kerry @ 8:27 am

Of course you can! Find pictures of football logos and other logos on the web. Talk about what makes a good logo. Then let your kids draw a new logo for one of the NFL teams.

Be sure to have plenty of scrap paper for sketches, as well as lots of colored markers to make their logo bright and beautiful.

Football, Super Bowl & Geography

Filed under: Homeschooling, Love of Learning, Inspire You Children — Kerry @ 8:11 am

Try one or more of these four fun geography activities this week, integrating Super Bowl and football into your plans.

Here’s a good outline map of the United States: http://www.eduplace.com/ss/maps/pdf/us_nl.pdf

Find all the playoff teams and label them on the map in a different color.
Find Phoenix and label it as Super Bowl.

You can change this by changing the color code. You might color code the cities by AFC & NFC.

PAST CHAMPIONS
Find & label all the past Super Bowl Champions on a US map.
Include the city name and year they won.

NFL TEAMS
Find all the NFL Teams and their home city.
Label each on a US map.
You may want to color code them by AFC & NFC.

SUPER BOWL LOCATION
Find all the locations that hosted the Super Bowl in the past.
Label each location & the year they hosted the Super Bowl.

Snow, Snow & More Snow

Filed under: Kerry Beck — Kerry @ 7:42 am

Did you know we were suppose to move back to Texas last year, but decided to wait and move this coming summer? Well, God has a sense of humor because this is the worst winter we’ve had up here in Idaho. Snow, Snow, and more Snow!

Actually, I think it’s beautiful outside, but it’s a mess! Since our truck (the only vehicle with snow tires) caught on fire last spring (remember the truck fire sale), we decided we could make it this winter without studded snow tires. The past 3 winters have been so mild, how could this one be any worse? Let’s just say we’ve had a few nerve-wracking trips, with lots of prayer!

Speaking of snow, did you see the Green Bay football game in the blizzard a couple of weeks ago? I had a new appreciation for games in the snow.

Well, football is in the air …in our house.

This week we are gearing up for the Super Bowl, so I want to share some fun activities you could do with your kids. Why not make math, writing & history a little more interesting by tying it to football and the Super Bowl?

I’ll be posting activities on my blog each day, so check back for your daily Super Bowl activity.

The Strenuous Life

Filed under: quotes — Kerry @ 7:41 am

Did you know that Teddy Roosevelt wrote dozens of books? He was a voracious reader and prolific writer…something I aspire to be! One of his books was called The Strenuous Life and I hope to get my hands on a copy soon so I can read it. Here’s what TR says about the strenuous life.

I wish to preach not the doctrine of ignoble ease but the doctrine of the strenuous life; the life of toil and effort; of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes not to the man who desires mere easy peace but to the man who does not shrink from danger, hardship,or from the bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph.

BTW, “leaders are those who make the most of every moment, of every opportunity, and of every available resource” (TRoosevelt). Are you raising your children to lead? Are you helping them make the most of the opportunities and resources available to them?

Teaching Your Kids Discipleship

Filed under: Raising Leaders, Moms, Bible, Mentoring — Kerry @ 7:14 am

Yesterday’s sermon was thought provoking, not necessarily because of the application, but some interesting insights in the passage. The text was Matthew 8 where Jesus heals the leper, the centurion’s servant and Peter’s mother-in-law.

Peter Leithart showed this passage as one of a pattern in which Matthew shows Jesus’ miracles, followed by an explanation of Jesus’ ministry and finally a “call to discipleship” If you read Matthew 8-10, you will see this pattern repeated in Matt 8:1-22, Matt 8:23-9:17 and Matt 9:18-10:42.

Within Matthew 8, we see several applications that I want to teach my own children and learn these myself.

1. Do you really believe?
The leper comes to Jesus believing he can be healed as he says, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

Do you really believe God can heal your problems, whether they are physical, job-related, familial, marital, financial? Can God really heal your situation?

2. Will you help anyone in need, even the wierdos around you?

Jesus does not withdraw from the outcast. In fact, he touches the unclean. Jews at this time would have nothing to do with lepers and were usually repulsed by them. In a few short sentences, it’s difficult to convey the distain that society had for lepers.  On the other hand, Jesus shows us how we ought to treat the outcasts around us.

Does God ever place people in your life that turn your stomach? You know, you really don’t want to be around them because they are weird.

3. Will you help those who might come back & hurt you?
Not only is the leper an outcast, the centurion is also an outcast to the Jewish community. Most Jews would not help him during this time period. Think about it, the centurion is a Gentile, a Roman, a military commander (against the Jews). In the near future, he might call up his troops to destroy the Jews. Ironically, Jesus declares, “I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel.” This Roman centurion has more faith than the Jews, God’s chosen people.

Jesus heals the centurion’s servant with just a word. He knew the times were changing from Jews to Gentiles. He also elevated the Roman centurion above the Jews due to his faith.

4. Jesus is the only solution to your problems.
After these miracles are described, Matthew reminds us of Isaiah’s words.
“He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sickness.” This often refers to Christ taking your sins upon the cross, but it also refers to Jesus taking our infirmities, weaknesses and disease upon Himself.

Discipleship is not just about “you” being saved & healed; it’s about you being healed so you can go be a healer, too. When you are saved, you are caught up in Christ’s river of life. So much so, that you can’t help yourself to reach out and “heal” those in need around you.

5. What model of discipleship will you follow?
After modeling discipleship to His disciples, Matthew further explains the cost of being Christ’s discipleship. When one of his disciples asked Jesus if he could “first go and bury (his) father”, Jesus tells him to “Follow Me”. I’ve often thought this man’s dad just died and Jesus won’t even let him bury him properly. This isn’t really the case. If that man’s dad had just died, he would not be talking to Jesus but instead making funeral preparations. This disciple wanted to care for his dad in old age and then follow Jesus Christ. Taking care of the elderly was very important to Jews, so he was following the pattern of those around him.

What we learn in this story is that even good & right family obligations must be put aside to follow Jesus Christ. Following Jesus trumps all other obligations.

Are you reaching out to the outcast, those you think are weirdos in your life?
Are you modeling this so your children will help those around them, too?
Are you placing Jesus Christ above all other obligations?
Or, do you put Him on the back burner so you can give your kids the best education possible?

Hands-On Training for Future Leaders

Filed under: Raising Leaders — Kerry @ 11:43 am

From Steve awhile back:

I am sitting in my office (home office, that is) making CD’s
to take to a book show in Montana. Actually, I made over 100
CD’s complete with cases in the past two days!

And I am only about half-way through!

Are these for my new course, Secrets to Building Sites that Sell?

Nah, I am having a duplicator do those. And besides, I won’t be
selling those at book shows, because the deadline for the
purchase of Secrets to Building Sites that Sell ends tonight at
Midnight (Pacific time).

No, these CD’s and video tutorials cover a wide range of topics
from parenting, making biblical decisions, the biblical view of
debt, how the Old Testament saints were saved, to the value of
practical skills for your children, how to turn a recording into
a product and is ebay right for you.

And I plan on doing some audios on Home Remodeling: an industry
I was involved in for 20 years. Do you think I have some
specialized knowledge there? Do YOU have any specialized
knowledge in a topic?

You see, I create new products almost every month.

And one of the criticisms I get is, “You only make money telling
other people how to make money; you don’t do this yourself!”
