How do you encourage your kids to desire a leadership education? They love learning, but want to “check off the box”.
Answer: Have you read A Different Kind of Teacher, by John Gatto? It gives an overall picture of what is actually happening in the schools today. It can lead to some good discussion and questioning on her part as to what a real education is. My kids have the “check off the box” mindset, too. I am working on ways to change this. My oldest is starting to grasp this as she considers what to do after high school. Although she wants to go to college, she doesn’t want to waste time going to classes that don’t teach her anything or offer a perspective opposite of her worldview. Gatto might help your daughter with a new outlook on education, as well as give her a glimpse of what you want for her.
If we take the generally accepted definition of bravery as a quality which knows not fear, I have never seen a brave man. All men are frightened. The more intelligent they are, the more they are frightened. The courageous man is the man who forces himself, in spite of his fear, to carry on.
-General George Patton (1885-1945)
I am definitely not a big proponent of unschooling. In fact, I quote the verse about “children left to their own are a shame to their mothers” at homeschooling workshops. I wholeheartedly agree with you in this area.
The Biblical mandate is to train our children and to TEACH them diligently. Training children in character is not an option, nor is it an option within the Scripture. Studying science is a way to learn to take dominion and history is teaches us about God’s plan for the nations, about our role in civic sphere. Of course we all want to read the great books and develop great communicators. And then there is math. If we study math we can learn more about God while developing our brains to think more clearly. None of these subjects are ones I want my dc to miss out on. I see them as all important, college or no college intented. Left to choose on their own, my younger children would not choose wisely - at least at this point. So, they have to learn to do things they don’t like.
After a wild weekend, I am back on track. I won’t bore you with the details, but our server was hit by a mail bomb (sounds scary). Our techies worked round-the-clock to get our sites back online.
Today I have 3 announcements for you.
1. Some of you may wonder why my last few emails were about home business when this newsletter is about homeschool. For me, it is vital that my children learn entrepreneurial ideas before they leave home so home business is part of our homeschool. An entrepreneurial education allows my kids to have the freedom to choose what they will do as an adult - work for themselves or depend on someone else for a paycheck. Entrpreneurial strategies also teach my children to think for themselves and become a leader.
So, I include some info about business in my homeschool ezine every once in awhile. If you missed it and want to see what I’ve shared, you can sign up for my eBay Explained eCourse at no cost to you. eBay is the easiest and best place for kids to start a business and learn a multitude of business principles.
Get your FREE course by going here: eBay Explained
You can also get my audio recording, video snips, and go to the head of the class for Secrets to Online Auction Success (with a 30 minute advanced notice) by CLICKING here: How to Sell on eBay
2. Over the next few weeks, I will be making daily posts to my blog about leadership education and raising your children to be servant-leaders, instead of followers.
You can keep up with my posts by subscribing to my RSS feed.
There are RSS Feed Buttons to get my RSS feed and get notices everytime I post to my blog.
3. A dear friend of mine, Marilyn Rockett, wrote an article about Finishing Well. I think this is very appropriate as many of you are bringing your school year to an end. (OK, I know you may homeschool year-round. Our family is always educating, but we need breaks and have one coming up in a week.)
Take a few minutes and read Marilyn’s article. I’m sure it will encourage you as it did me.

While you are on Marilyn’s website, be sure to sign up for her newsletter.

ps. If you live in North Carolina or Virginia, please stop by our booth or workshop and introduce yourself. I love to put faces to names!
I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out for a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

Steve & I had a great time in Atlanta, but it sure feels good to be home after being gone for almost 2 weeks.
